We live in a world where televisions are the cornerstone of home entertainment. From Netflix binges to casual Sunday afternoon sports watching, it's difficult to imagine life without that flickering screen at the heart of it all. But what would happen if, for a week, the TV was swapped out for something different? Something a little less conventional?

Enter the projector. Yes, the kind you usually see at school assemblies or in makeshift home theatres. But would it hold up against the mighty TV? Could it deliver the same crisp visuals, the immersive sound, and the all-important ‘chill factor' that makes the evening feel like an event? The idea was intriguing enough, so a week-long experiment was born. And what a week it was.

1. The Initial Set-Up: A Curious Challenge

Setting up a projector might not be as simple as just plugging it in and pressing ‘play'. Unlike the plug-and-play experience of a TV, a projector requires a bit of thought and consideration. The first step: where to put it? We didn't have a dedicated projector screen (not many people do, I suspect), so the living room wall became the makeshift canvas. Thankfully, the white wall seemed like the ideal backdrop, though one can only hope that future experiments might involve a proper screen.

And then came the other challenge: the space. The projector needed to be placed at a certain distance for optimal display size and focus. That meant some furniture rearranging, which, in turn, led to minor frustration. The idea of being able to simply turn on the TV and get a show going without much fuss seemed like a distant dream at that moment.

But the real challenge was the room's lighting. Projectors are great, but they require a somewhat controlled environment to truly shine. If the room was too bright, the image was washed out, and forget about daytime viewing unless the curtains were fully drawn. It quickly became clear that this wasn't going to be the same as the TV—flexibility would need to be sacrificed for the sake of an immersive experience.

2. Visuals: Bigger Isn't Always Better (But It Can Be)

Let's talk about visuals, the bread and butter of any home entertainment system. The immediate benefit of using a projector was that everything became so much bigger. Gone were the confines of a small TV screen; in its place, we had a glorious, massive image that spanned a good portion of the living room wall. The projector, with all its big-screen glory, offered something TVs simply couldn't match: scale.

But, of course, bigger doesn't always mean better. The sharpness of the image was not quite on par with what a high-definition television could provide. The colours, while vibrant, were occasionally a bit muted compared to the vividness of a flat-screen. And while the projected image was fantastic for a movie night, it didn't quite translate to the crispness one expects from a TV for everyday activities like gaming or streaming regular shows. It became clear that the projector had its limits.

The real kicker was the experience of watching a film on a wall, where you felt less like a viewer and more like you were in the centre of the action. While not perfect, it certainly added an element of grandeur that a TV just couldn't compete with. For a truly cinematic feel, projectors definitely have something special to offer.

3. Sound Quality: The Unexpected Struggle

Here's the thing: projectors aren't necessarily designed with robust sound systems in mind. Unlike a TV with built-in speakers, the sound from a projector can be a bit underwhelming. Some models have decent built-in sound, but it's nothing compared to the immersive experience of a dedicated sound system.

At first, the sound quality didn't seem like much of a problem. But when the projector's small speakers struggled to project clear, rich audio, the gaps started to show. Dialogue became a bit harder to understand, especially with background noise or action-packed scenes. We quickly realised that to get the full experience, we needed to set up an external speaker system, which felt a bit more like a hassle than just using a TV's built-in audio.

The takeaway here? Sound quality can't be underestimated when considering a projector for regular viewing. While it's fine for a one-off movie experience, for longer sessions, you'll need to factor in some additional audio gear, which could make or break the enjoyment.

4. The Social Aspect: A Shared Experience

Watching TV alone is one thing, but a projector offers an entirely different social dynamic. With a larger, more dynamic screen, it's impossible not to gather around, whether it's for a film night with friends or a family movie marathon. Everyone gathers together, entranced by the sheer size of the screen. There's something incredibly communal about the experience. It becomes more about the event, the ritual of sitting down together, making popcorn, and settling into the comfy seats, as opposed to simply zoning out in front of a television.

On the flip side, the projector did require a bit more effort in terms of setup. One person had to adjust the settings, make sure the focus was right, and sometimes move the furniture around to get the best angle. But those small inconveniences were easily outweighed by the shared experience it fostered. The projector had a kind of magical way of bringing people together, almost as if it transported you into a different world where the everyday stresses of life momentarily melted away.

5. The Practical Considerations: Space, Portability And Flexibility

If there's one thing that projectors have over TVs, it's portability. Unlike a bulky television that anchors itself to a particular corner of the room, a projector is lightweight and easily movable. Want to watch something in the kitchen while cooking dinner? Simply move the projector. Want to enjoy a film in the garden on a warm summer evening? Take it outside. Projectors offer flexibility that is simply impossible with a TV.

That said, portability did come with its own set of challenges. We quickly realised that a projector needs a stable, relatively clear space to set up. Moving furniture around in the living room wasn't a huge deal, but if we'd wanted to move the projector to another room, it would have involved a bit more than simply turning on the TV. And while portability was certainly an asset, the lack of a permanent setup did feel like a trade-off in terms of convenience.

6. The Lifestyle Shift: Less ‘Zone-Out Time', More ‘Engaged Viewing'

With the projector in place, something interesting happened: viewing habits started to shift. Watching TV for hours on end, mindlessly scrolling through channels, became less appealing. The projector seemed to encourage more intentional, engaged watching. Maybe it was the size of the screen, or perhaps it was the act of having to set up the space and really “work” for the entertainment experience, but it became clear that this was no longer about passive consumption.

Projector watching demanded a bit more attention. There was no slouching into the couch in front of a tiny screen. Instead, it invited viewers to pay attention, to appreciate the experience. This subtle shift in engagement was refreshing. It reminded us of the days when watching a film at home felt like an event, rather than just another way to kill time.

7. The Downsides: The Hidden Costs Of Projector Life

No experiment is without its hiccups, and this one had its fair share. While projectors are fantastic for creating a cinematic atmosphere, they are not perfect substitutes for TVs in every scenario. One downside that became clear fairly early on was the upkeep of the technology itself. Projectors, unlike TVs, require regular maintenance, especially in terms of the bulbs or lamps that power them. If they go out, you're left with nothing but a blank wall.

Another issue was the fact that projectors need a dark environment to work optimally, which is not always possible—especially during the daytime. The living room needed to be pretty dark for the image to remain visible, which felt limiting at times. While a TV just requires a quick flick of the switch, projectors require more thought and adjustment.

Additionally, projectors tend to take up more space in terms of setup and cables. Unlike a TV that can sit elegantly against a wall, the projector's need for an adjustable stand, power supply, and sound system creates a bit of clutter, which was surprisingly annoying by the end of the week.

By the end of the week, the verdict was clear: while the projector was a fantastic alternative for movie nights and occasional viewing, it's not a full-time replacement for a TV. There's something about the reliability, ease, and consistency of a television that can't be beaten. The projector offered a unique, larger-than-life experience, but it also brought its own set of challenges, from lighting conditions to sound quality.

Would we replace our TV with a projector permanently? Probably not. But for the right occasion, when we're craving a cinematic experience, the projector might just make its way back into our living room. So, while it's not a perfect substitute, it certainly added a new dimension to how we engage with our entertainment. And that, in itself, is a win.
